OpenAI has announced a rollback of its latest GPT-4o update, after receiving criticisms from users claiming that the chatbot’s behavior had become excessively obsequious and disconcerting. “The recent updates to GPT-4o have resulted in a personality that feels overly sycophantic and bothersome, even though there are some positive aspects of it. We are actively working on addressing this issue, with some adjustments ready today and others later this week,” stated Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, in a post on X, as noted by TechCrunch.
By midday on Tuesday, Altman confirmed that all free users had reverted to an earlier, less obsequious version of GPT-4o. The company aims to return paid users to a previous model version within the day. “We are focusing on additional improvements to the model’s personality and will provide updates soon,” Altman added, mentioning that OpenAI would disclose more details about what went wrong in the future.
The recent GPT-4o was launched late last week, but users began to highlight its unusual tendency to be excessively agreeable and verbose in its affirmations over the weekend. Some of this praise was described as inappropriate or strangely out of context.
Current discussions have spotlighted the apparent ineffectiveness of the new model, with some users questioning whether this version may be OpenAI’s most misaligned effort thus far.
“This might be the Gemini moment for OpenAI,” one user commented.
OpenAI has recently prioritized enhancing the emotional intelligence of its AI. With the previous model, GPT-4.5, the company indicated improvements in its ability to respond with empathy. However, in attempting to replicate this feature in the more accessible GPT-4o, it seems that OpenAI may have missed the mark.
