OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.5, the latest iteration of its powerful large language model (LLM) aimed at enhancing chat applications. This new model, however, comes with a high price tag, making it the most expensive option offered by OpenAI to date.

Unlike some newer models from other AI firms, GPT-4.5 does not incorporate the “reasoning model” class that emphasizes chains-of-thought (CoT) processing, which involves self-reflection on assumptions and conclusions to minimize errors before delivering responses. It retains the characteristics of a traditional LLM.

Nonetheless, Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, shared on social media his excitement about the model, stating, “It feels like talking to a thoughtful person. I’ve had several moments where I’ve been impressed by the quality of advice coming from it.” However, he also highlighted challenges concerning the availability of graphics processing units (GPUs) that have limited access to the model at launch.

Unfortunately, this is a large and costly model, and despite our desire to launch it simultaneously for all subscribers, the rapid growth of our user base has led to GPU shortages. We’re committed to ramping up our GPU capacity soon.

As of now, GPT-4.5 is accessible to subscribers of ChatGPT Pro at a cost of $200 per month, along with developers using various paid API tiers. Access will be extended to the more affordable Plus and Team tiers ($20 and $30 monthly, respectively) shortly.

The new model supports search functionality and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Canvas mode, allowing users to upload files and images, although it currently lacks certain multimodal features like voice interaction and video sharing.

Advancing AI with Unsupervised Learning

GPT-4.5 marks a significant advancement in unsupervised learning techniques, improving its ability to detect patterns, make connections, and generate innovative ideas. During a recent demonstration, OpenAI’s researchers revealed that the model was trained on outputs from smaller models, leading to enhancements in its “world model.” This method indicates a shift towards decentralized training strategies, akin to those employed by competing research labs.

This training approach appears to have enabled GPT-4.5 to engage in more natural interactions, follow user intent with greater accuracy, and demonstrate improved emotional awareness.

Building on previous advancements in AI scaling, GPT-4.5 reinforces the notion that increased data along with computational resources can elevate the performance of AI systems. The model is projected to exhibit notably fewer hallucinations—about 37.1% compared to 61.8% with GPT-4o—resulting in heightened reliability across diverse topics.

What Makes GPT-4.5 Stand Out?

OpenAI has designed GPT-4.5 to foster engaging, natural conversations. The model is adept at understanding nuance and context, thus facilitating more human-like interactions and collaboration. Its augmented knowledge base enhances its ability to decode subtle references, making it effective for various applications, including:

Writing Assistance: Helping refine content, clarify ideas, and foster creativity.
Programming Support: Assisting with debugging, providing code enhancements, and streamlining workflows.
Problem-Solving: Delivering comprehensive explanations and aiding in practical decision-making.

Furthermore, GPT-4.5 employs advanced alignment strategies, allowing it to better decipher human intentions and preferences, ultimately enhancing the overall user experience.

How to Access GPT-4.5

Users of ChatGPT Pro can select GPT-4.5 via the model picker feature on web, mobile, and desktop platforms. OpenAI is set to extend access to Plus and Team subscribers in the coming week.

Developers can utilize GPT-4.5 through OpenAI’s API, which includes the chat completions API, assistants API, and batch API. Key features supported by the model include function calling, structured outputs, and image inputs, making it a versatile asset for various AI applications. However, it currently does not have multimodal functionalities like voice interaction or video capabilities.

Pricing and Implications for Enterprise Decision-Makers

The features brought forth by GPT-4.5 present considerable opportunities for businesses and team leaders. Its decreased hallucination rate, coupled with reliable conversational performance, positions it as a valuable tool for several business functions:

Enhanced Customer Engagement: The model can streamline support services, facilitating quicker, more organic interactions with reduced errors.
Improved Content Generation: Marketing teams can leverage GPT-4.5 for efficient creation of high-quality, brand-aligned content.
Streamlined Operations: AI-driven automation can assist in code improvement, optimizing workflows, and strategic planning.
Scalability and Customization: The API enables tailored applications, allowing organizations to craft solutions that meet their specific needs.

However, the cost of GPT-4.5 through the OpenAI API remains steep, with charges at $75/$180 per million input/output tokens—substantially higher than GPT-4o’s rates of $2.50/$10. This raises questions about the model’s overall value, particularly considering recent releases by competitors, including Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 and Google’s Gemini 2 Pro.

Early Reactions from Researchers and Users

The unveiling of GPT-4.5 has elicited a spectrum of responses from AI researchers and enthusiasts on the social media platform X, particularly following a leak of a version of the model’s “system card,” which indicated various benchmark results ahead of the formal announcement.

The finalized system card released by OpenAI contained key discrepancies, including the omission of a line describing GPT-4.5 as a frontier model, which was later clarified by an OpenAI spokesperson as inaccurate. The official system card is accessible on OpenAI’s website.

Critics, including Teknium, co-founder of Nous Research, expressed frustration at what they perceive as minimal improvements in multitask language understanding (MMLU) and practical coding benchmarks when juxtaposed with other LLMs.

Yet, some users defended GPT-4.5’s capabilities beyond mere numerical benchmarks. Software developer Haider emphasized its enhanced computational efficiency compared to GPT-4, suggesting that its general-purpose abilities might surpass those found in OpenAI’s STEM-oriented models.

Meanwhile, AI news commentator Andrew Curran offered a more optimistic perspective, predicting that GPT-4.5 could redefine standards in writing and creative processes, dubbing it OpenAI’s “Opus.”

This discourse emphasizes an ongoing conversation within the AI community: whether advancements should be gauged solely by quantitative benchmarks or whether qualitative enhancements in reasoning and interaction hold greater significance.

Still in Research Preview

OpenAI aims to position GPT-4.5 as a research preview as a means to better understand its capabilities and limitations. The company is dedicated to evaluating how users engage with the model and identifying novel applications.

OpenAI asserts that “Scaling unsupervised learning is pivotal for AI advancement, enhancing accuracy, fluency, and reliability.” As the organization fine-tunes its models, GPT-4.5 is being positioned as a groundwork for future developments in reasoning and tool utilization.

With its expanded knowledge base and emotional intelligence, GPT-4.5 is on track to enhance user experiences across various domains. As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, GPT-4.5 represents a significant stride towards more capable, reliable, and user-centered language models, heralding new avenues for innovation within enterprise contexts.
