OpenAI’s O1 Rejected Its Name: Here’s the Alternative It Proposed.

OpenAI recently unveiled its latest model, named OpenAI o1, which boasts improved reasoning abilities. The new model emphasizes increased processing time to generate responses, mirroring human thought patterns.

Despite its significant role in the AI landscape, OpenAI often grapples with criticism regarding its product naming conventions. CEO Sam Altman previously labeled the name “ChatGPT” as “a horrible name” during a podcast appearance in 2023. He reiterated the company’s need to “revamp” its branding approach as recently as July this year.

As anticipation built among OpenAI followers, some speculated a whimsical name like “Strawberry” could emerge for the new model. However, in the official press release, OpenAI detailed the rationale behind choosing the name o1.

“This marks a significant advancement in complex reasoning tasks and signifies a new tier of AI capability,” the company stated. “In light of this development, we’re resetting the naming convention to the beginning and identifying this series as OpenAI o1.”

A Reflective Evaluation from o1

In a unique twist, Business Insider requested feedback from o1 about its name through a targeted prompt.

The prompt asked, “Imagine you’re a marketing or branding expert. How would you honestly assess an AI company proposing a model name of ‘o1’? Please provide a rating from 1-10 with justifications.”

After a brief contemplation, o1 gave a thoughtful yet candid review, scoring the name a mere 4 out of 10. The model expressed concerns over the name’s abstract nature, lack of a strong brand identity, and potential trademark issues. It also noted possible search engine optimization (SEO) challenges, as users might confuse the letter “o” with the numeral “0.”

The assessment revealed that while the model can reason like a human, its feedback style lacked the subtlety typical of human communication.

“The name ‘o1’ lacks the distinctiveness and communicative strength required for effective branding in AI language models,” it observed. “This could foster confusion and impede online discoverability, ultimately undermining efforts to build a memorable brand.”

Suggestions for a New Name

Continuing the inquiry, Business Insider engaged o1 for alternative naming suggestions. After an eight-second contemplation, it proposed ten potential names, including LexiAI.

The justification was that LexiAI brings together “Lexi” (derived from “lexicon,” referring to vocabulary or language) and “AI,” reflecting a focus on artificial intelligence in the realm of language.

Other name suggestions included Linguista, EchoMind, NexText, Dialogix, WordSmith AI, Verba, InnovaLingo, Cognitext, and LuminaryAI. Each suggestion was grounded in considerations like relevance, memorability, trademark feasibility, SEO efficacy, and ease of pronunciation.

Business Insider further probed o1 with a hypothetical scenario: if the model’s primary advancement was its ability to “follow a chain of thought” more effectively than predecessors, what names would be fitting?

After 15 seconds, o1 generated a list of 20 names, recommending “LogicFlow” as a standout option. It explained that LogicFlow suggests a seamless progression of reasoning, indicating advanced cognitive capabilities.

Additional suggested names included CogniChain, LogicLink, SynapChain, MindFlow, CogniPath, and IntelliThread. Each of these recommendations came with rationale, illustrating how an effective name could position OpenAI’s product as an innovative leader in the market.
