Oprah Winfrey has chosen “Matriarch,” a memoir penned by Tina Knowles, as the latest selection for her book club. This personal account sheds light on Knowles’ life experiences, tracing her journey from growing up in a segregated Texas to becoming the mother of music icons Beyoncé and Solange.

In a recent segment on “CBS Mornings,” Winfrey lauded the memoir, highlighting its ability to resonate on both an intimate and universal level.

“What you accomplished is quite remarkable for a memoir, which is to convey your personal narrative while making it relatable to everyone,” Winfrey remarked to Knowles. “I truly believe that anyone who has a mother or is a mother will find this story deeply meaningful.”

The memoir includes surprising insights, including Knowles’ past battle with cancer, a fact that took even Winfrey by surprise.

Knowles, who as a child earned the nickname “bad ass Tenie B” due to her candid personality, shared her mixed feelings about revealing her life story. “While today is joyous, it also brings a bit of anxiety because you’re sharing personal details with the world,” she confessed.

The book’s origins trace back to a much more extensive manuscript. “I began with a whopping 1,000 pages,” Knowles recounted, laughing as she noted her publisher’s insistence on a more concise approach, stating, “Nobody’s going to read a book that long.”

“I endeavored to narrate my experiences without overshadowing the stories of others, which proved to be quite challenging,” Knowles added.

She expressed her hope that her memoir would inspire readers to reflect on their own family histories. “I also encourage individuals to explore their ancestral roots and understand their legacies,” she stated.

Knowles desires to create a lasting legacy for future generations of her family. “Since I never knew my grandparents, I feel it’s vital to leave behind this narrative for my grandchildren and even great-grandchildren, who might never meet me. I want them to have my story in my own words, rather than being interpreted by others,” she explained.

“The Best, Most Important Job”

The memoir also discusses Knowles’ lengthy marriage to Mathew Knowles, the father of Beyoncé and Solange. She revealed that her children were largely unaware of the complexities of their parents’ on-again, off-again relationship until they were older.

“There was a period when we separated, and it was tough on them because they were so young and didn’t understand why it was happening,” Knowles shared. “It’s a delicate situation until they grow up because you don’t want to burden them with adult issues.”

Winfrey noted Knowles’ progressive approach to parenting, highlighting how she facilitated therapy for her daughters at a young age, aiming to help them recognize and appreciate each other’s unique talents.

“From the beginning, she understood the importance of nurturing the girls’ relationship and sought external support to address it effectively,” Winfrey remarked.

The memoir also touches on Knowles’ childhood experiences, discussing the impact of racism and revealing that her maiden name was Beyoncé, which later inspired her daughter’s iconic stage name.

Furthermore, Knowles explains the origins of the name for the famous girl group Destiny’s Child. “I had their picture in my NIV study Bible, and one day when I opened it, ‘Destiny’ stood out to me. I knew immediately that was the name. My ex-husband contributed ‘child’ to it since there was already a group with that part of the name,” she recounted.

Reflecting on motherhood, Knowles described it as the “best, most important job” one can have. Despite her rebellious youth, she felt a responsibility to approach parenting with intention and purpose: “With my children, I recognized the need to control my actions. I wanted to be deliberate and thoughtful because I didn’t want to make mistakes that could affect them.”

“Matriarch” is currently available for readers, and Knowles is set to embark on a book tour to promote her memoir. Further insights can be found on “The Oprah Podcast,” accessible on YouTube or through various podcast platforms.
