The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is set to enhance roadway safety and infrastructure thanks to a substantial $30 million federal grant. This funding will support critical upgrades along a 1.9-mile stretch of OR 126, located west of Eugene.
Construction for the upgrades, which aims to span from Huston Road to Lake Side Drive in rural Lane County, is anticipated to commence in the years 2026-2027.
The announcement regarding the funding was made public on Friday by the U.S. Department of Transportation as part of its Rural Surface Transportation Program.
The projected improvements include the installation of dual-lane roundabouts at Huston and Ellmaker Roads, the expansion of OR 126 from two lanes to four, and the development of safer facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. These enhancements will involve widening road shoulders and creating a dedicated shared-use path.

Mayor Keith Wiess of Veneta expressed his support, highlighting that “Highway 126 has been a significant safety concern for Veneta for over two decades.” He further noted, “This project will greatly enhance the safety and quality of life for our residents.”
Though currently in the design phase, the plans also encompass the addition of a left-turn lane at Lakeside Drive, upgrades to railroad crossings at Huston Road, and the establishment of a new transit stop to improve regional mobility.
