[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 11 “Flight of Icarus.”]

The latest installment of NCIS: Origins centers on the character Mike Franks, played by Kyle Schmid, delving into his formative years. The narrative unfolds through flashbacks that portray Franks’s early experiences and the relationship he had with his brother, especially as they both enlisted for the Vietnam War. In the modern-day storyline, Franks faces the challenge of navigating his day in Reebok sneakers while Tish, portrayed by Tonantzin Carmelo, works on getting his cherished boots fixed. Meanwhile, Lala, played by Mariel Molino, expresses her discontent when Randy, depicted by Caleb Foote, attempts to arrange a date for Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell.

Co-showrunners Gina Lucita Monreal, who co-wrote the episode, and David J. North share insights about the return of the series in the middle of the season and hint at what viewers can expect in forthcoming episodes.

This episode deeply explores Franks’ backstory, particularly his relationship with his brother and his motivations for joining the Marines. Could you elaborate on how this narrative was constructed and the significance of the boots within it?

Gina Lucita Monreal: The boots are an iconic symbol for Franks. David has a humorous anecdote about Kyle’s attachment to them, as he feels a transformation into the character when he wears them. We had previously established the importance of the boots in his conversation with Tish, which led us to ponder: What would happen if he were without them for a day? It became a clever device for transitioning into his flashbacks, balancing the lighter moments with the more somber themes in the episode. Additionally, integrating music into this episode was thrilling, especially as Bob Dylan has recently regained popularity due to a biopic. The song selected holds significant relevance within Franks’ narrative, and we’re eager for audiences to experience that connection.

David J. North: Indeed, Bob Dylan is quite relevant now, thanks to the movie featuring Timothée Chalamet. On a lighter note, Kyle’s experience on set while wearing the Reebok sneakers was quite telling; he approached me, expressing his discomfort without his boots. As a Canadian, he adopts a Texan accent to embody Franks, and removing the boots added to his unease. That discomfort translated well on camera.

How do you plan to further explore Franks’ family background?

Monreal: We will continue to delve into Franks’ backstory, particularly highlighting the dynamic with his brother, as it plays a critical role in his life. This episode marks just the beginning of exploring Franks’ history.

Randy’s attempt to set Gibbs up on a date shows the latter’s reluctance. Given the trajectory of Gibbs’s personal life thus far, how are you approaching this narrative thread?

North: We aim to portray Gibbs’ journey authentically, recognizing the weight of his past losses. While there’s a chemistry evident between Gibbs and Lala, it’s clear that Gibbs struggles with his feelings. Our approach is to remain realistic, taking it step by step.

Monreal: And it’s important for us to remain consistent with the established lore of the series, making it a fascinating challenge.

Regarding Gibbs’ ex-wife Diane, will she be making an appearance soon?

Monreal: It looks like you’re well-versed in NCIS lore! Yes, we’re keeping a close eye on Gibbs’ romantic developments and intend to stick closely to the canon.

With the background established for Lala, can we expect more revelations about her character this season?

North: Yes, there’s more to come regarding her story and significance in the plot.

Gibbs appears interested in a veteran support group. How will this theme develop going forward?

Monreal: We strive to keep this storyline authentic while adhering to established lore. Gibbs’ interest in the veteran support group will be an ongoing exploration in subsequent episodes.

Will we see the beginning of Gibbs’ boat building this season?

North: We’ve laid the groundwork for that in earlier episodes. For instance, in “Blue Bayou,” Gibbs was seen engaging in some DIY projects in his basement, hinting at his eventual return to boat building.

David, you mentioned that significant changes await Franks in his personal life. Can you share any further details on this?

North: I prefer to keep that under wraps for now, but viewers should prepare for substantial developments in Franks’ journey.

What elements of the relationship between Franks and Tish do you find most rewarding?

Monreal: We cherish their relationship. It adds depth to Franks’ character, allowing him to seek her insight and fostering a different layer of connection. Their dynamic is enjoyable and is set for further exploration as the season progresses.

Will we see more of Randy’s life at home?

North: While we haven’t discussed that in detail for this season, it’s definitely something we’re interested in exploring in the future, especially involving his character Junie.

Are there plans for more light-hearted interactions between Gibbs and Randy?

Monreal: Absolutely! Their dynamic is delightful to write, and Randy’s character brings a refreshing lightness, which balances the show while retaining the humor and familial themes intrinsic to NCIS.

Can you provide any insights into the mysterious Operation Sundown and how it will affect the team?

North: While I can’t divulge too much right now, I can assure you that Operation Sundown will have implications for everyone involved, including some unexpected characters.

With Vera collaborating with Bugs and the presence of a second sniper, should audiences be concerned about her safety or the team’s?

North: We will reveal more about Vera’s profiling program and her connection to Bugs, suggesting layers to their relationship. However, with the looming threat posed by a second sniper, all team members should certainly be on alert.

NCIS: Origins, airs Mondays at 10/9c on CBS.
