The adventures of the Condé Nast Traveler editors in 2024 highlight the enduring charm of classic destinations. While many have explored the furthest reaches of the globe, the ability to travel with loved ones, revisit cherished cities, or explore our own local environments often brings profound joy.

This year’s standout trips took us from the serene beauty of New York’s Hudson Valley and Hoodsport in Washington to iconic international hubs like Japan and Paris, as well as picturesque islands in Canada and Greece. The editorial team enjoyed leisurely road trips filled with laughter, culinary delights, and nostalgia, inviting readers to reflect on their own travel experiences from the past year.

For associate entertainment director Eugene Shevertalov, Japan offered a remarkable culinary journey.

A Journey through Japan’s Cities

In August, Shevertalov embarked on a two-week exploration of Japan, visiting the vibrant cities of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. He indulged in local delicacies such as takoyaki and blowfish, and reveled in the sushi available at numerous Michelin-starred establishments. His culinary tour included Narisawa in Tokyo, Sushi Hoshiyama and Nishitemma Nakamura in Osaka, and Shinmonzen Yonemura and Godan Miyazawa in Kyoto. His shopping experience in Tokyo was equally enjoyable, specifically when he and his husband found antique eyewear at SOLAKZADE, which required an appointment. Throughout their stay, they enjoyed luxurious accommodations, including the Mandarin Oriental and Aman in Tokyo, The St. Regis in Osaka, and the exquisite Ritz-Carlton in Kyoto. However, the highlight was the memorable experience at Beniya Mukayu Ryokan, a family-run ryokan near Kanazawa, renowned for its blend of cultural immersion, artistic displays, spa services, and excellent cuisine. Shevertalov described this stay as life-enhancing and unforgettable.

Exploring Hoodsport, Washington

Meanwhile, associate social media manager Kayla Brock found joy closer to home during a spontaneous weekend trip to Hoodsport, Washington. After returning from an extensive trip, she was invited to a cabin retreat just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Portland, Oregon. Initially unplanned, the getaway became a much-needed respite. The cozy cabin featured a hot tub, where hours were blissfully spent soaking and enjoying music amidst tranquil surroundings. A visit to Lake Cushman, a stunning reservoir surrounded by lush mountains, showcased the area’s European-like beauty, with clear blue-green waters glistening even under cloudy skies. A highlight included indulging in ice cream from Hoodsport Coffee Company and warming up with chai from a roadside espresso stand. This simple, serene excursion allowed Brock to recharge and reconnect with nature.
