National Mourning in Israel: A Family’s Tragic Story
The Israeli community came together in significant numbers to honor a family that has come to symbolize the nation’s struggles following the attacks of October 7, 2023. The emotional funeral procession witnessed by thousands highlighted the collective grief and solidarity felt across the country.
Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, were abducted during the violent raid led by Hamas in southern Israel. Following their kidnapping, they were taken to Gaza, where they ultimately lost their lives while in captivity, as confirmed by Israeli officials. On Wednesday, amidst overwhelming sorrow nationwide, their bodies were laid to rest beneath clear skies close to their home community, from which they were violently taken.
For 16 agonizing months, the Bibas family represented a broader experience of fear and loss that gripped many Israelis. Their story endured as a poignant reminder of the tragedy inflicted on the country that fateful day when approximately 1,200 individuals were killed, and around 250 others were taken hostage to Gaza. Beyond their individual story, the Bibases exemplified the widespread sentiment of despair and abandonment, as military and governmental responses failed to ensure their safe return.
At the time of her abduction, Ms. Bibas was just 32 years old, while her son Ariel was merely four, and Kfir, the youngest victim, was not yet nine months old. Yarden Bibas, Shiri’s husband and father to the two boys, experienced his own harrowing ordeal during the same attack, leading to the broader conflict that has left Gaza in ruins and caused extensive loss of life among Palestinians.
Earlier this month, Mr. Bibas was finally returned to Israel alive, following a cease-fire agreement related to the ongoing conflict. The remains of Shiri and the children were repatriated just last week. Following forensic tests, Israeli authorities refuted claims made by Hamas that the family had died as a result of an Israeli airstrike, though no evidence has been publicly shared, respecting the family’s request for privacy.
During the eulogy, Mr. Bibas expressed his deep sorrow for not being able to protect his loved ones. He addressed Ariel and Kfir directly, expressing his regrets, and conveyed the surreal nature of his loss to Shiri, noting the painful distance between their love and his inability to comfort her in person.
Ofri Bibas, the sister of Yarden, voiced a collective frustration over governmental accountability, urging for an independent investigation into the failures surrounding the events of October 7. “There is no meaning to forgiveness before the failures are investigated and all officials take responsibility,” she stated. Her emphasis on accountability resonated with the crowd, highlighting a desire for change to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In a notable decision, government officials were advised to forgo attendance at the private burial ceremony, reflecting the family’s desire for a more personal farewell. This decision followed a critical statement from Ofri Bibas directed at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for not offering an apology to the family.
In Tel Aviv, crowds gathered at a central landmark now referred to as Hostage Square, where many watched a live stream of the eulogies. Attendees displayed their solidarity in various ways: some wrapped themselves in Israeli flags, while others donned orange clothing to honor the memory of the Bibas children. A gesture of unity was seen as participants released orange balloons into the air.
Maia Szryftman, traveling from Nahariya, expressed her heartfelt support for the grieving family, stating, “The heart aches for the two children, for the whole family.” Meanwhile, Yael Koren articulated her motivation for attending the gathering, emphasizing the importance of community during such dark times. She shared how her young son had attempted to grasp the weight of the situation through his drawings, illustrating the profound impact that these tragic events have on the younger generation.
“But you can’t explain it,” Koren concluded, reflecting on the deep complexities and emotional challenges many are facing in the aftermath of these events.
