Padres Restrict NLDS Ticket Sales to Boost Home Field Advantage
The San Diego Padres have swiftly advanced past the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card Series, requiring just two games at Petco Park, where they enjoyed the support of a predominantly Padres crowd. As they prepare for a crucial matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the upcoming National League Division Series (NLDS), the team is implementing measures aimed at fortifying their home field advantage.
While the initial games of the NLDS will occur at Dodger Stadium, the Padres are imposing specific restrictions on ticket sales for Games 3 and 4, scheduled to take place in San Diego. These limitations are designed to ensure that only local fans can attend, with strict eligibility criteria in place for ticket purchases.
Individuals from certain areas will have priority access, specifically excluding fans from five counties that comprise the greater Los Angeles area. This strategic decision reflects concerns over the potential influx of Dodgers supporters at Petco Park, which is located approximately 125 miles south of the Dodgers’ home venue.

Petco Park’s intense atmosphere, particularly during pivotal matchups with the Dodgers, is a significant advantage for the Padres. In the past, they have grappled with sizeable contingents of Dodgers fans traveling to their home games, thus, the need for tighter ticket access appears justified in the context of creating a more favorable environment for their players.
A notification on the Padres’ official website specifies that ticket access is limited to residents of San Diego County, southern Orange County, western Arizona, Las Vegas and its surrounding areas, as well as Baja California. The stipulation emphasizing residency is noted to be based on credit card billing addresses, reinforcing the Padres’ dedication to maintaining local support during these critical playoff games.
“Orders from residents outside the designated areas will be canceled without notice and refunds issued,” reads the announcement, underscoring the strict enforcement of these guidelines.
This isn’t the first time the Padres have implemented geographical restrictions. They adopted similar measures during the 2022 postseason against the Dodgers, which proved successful as they advanced past Los Angeles in four games.
As of recent reports, tickets for the NLDS games at Petco Park were not yet available on major ticket platforms, with initial availability estimated at around 1,000 tickets. There has been a surge in attendance at Padres games this season, with approximately 3.3 million fans having attended, marking a significant increase in local engagement.
Pitcher Michael King expressed his enthusiasm for playing in front of the dedicated Padres fanbase, stating, “Pitching in front of them is something that I absolutely love doing. I’m really happy we had home field for the wild card, because I think it’s a tough place to play as an opponent.”
The Padres also enjoyed success against the Dodgers during the regular season, winning eight of their 13 encounters. With the playoffs underway, the stakes are higher than ever as they look to leverage home field advantage in their quest for postseason success.
