Rising Tensions Between Pakistan and India Following Kashmir Attack

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – On Monday, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif indicated that an Indian military incursion might be forthcoming. This statement comes in the wake of a tragic militant attack targeting tourists in Kashmir, which resulted in the death of 26 individuals and intensified hostilities between the two countries.

This attack has stirred a wave of anger across India, a predominantly Hindu nation, prompting calls for a robust response against neighboring Pakistan, which is a Muslim-majority country. Accusations have been exchanged, with India blaming Pakistan for supporting militant activities in Kashmir—a contentious region that both nations claim and have previously fought over in two significant wars.

“We have reinforced our forces because it is something which is imminent now. So in that situation, some strategic decisions have to be taken, so those decisions have been made,” Asif stated during an interview in Islamabad.

Asif highlighted that India’s aggressive rhetoric has been escalating. Furthermore, he mentioned that Pakistan’s military leadership has provided assessments to the government regarding the potential for an Indian offensive, although he refrained from detailing his grounds for such conclusions.

In the aftermath of the attack, Indian authorities named two suspects as being of Pakistani origin. In response, Islamabad has categorically denied involvement and urged for an impartial inquiry into the incident.

Asif reiterated that Pakistan remains on high alert and emphasized that the nation would only consider using its nuclear capabilities if faced with a “direct threat to our existence.”
