A tragic accident claimed the lives of a couple and left multiple others injured in a seven-car collision in Illinois on April 28.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victims as Melissa Ann Lane, 49, and Brett Lane, 51, from Hinsdale, Illinois, as reported by NBC 5 Chicago. In addition to the Lanes, at least three additional individuals suffered injuries. All those involved in the crash were transported to local hospitals, but sadly, the Lanes were pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The collision took place around 2 p.m. local time on Friday, April 25, at the crossroads of 47th Street and Willow Springs Road in the suburb of La Grange, located near Chicago.
The La Grange police, in conjunction with the Major Case Assistance Team’s collision investigation unit, are actively working to determine the circumstances surrounding this significant accident, as outlined in a statement from the department.
According to preliminary findings shared by law enforcement, a white SUV was seen speeding northbound on Willow Springs Road prior to the crash. This vehicle struck several cars within the intersection, including the Lanes’ vehicle.
The couple left behind five children: Simon, Colin, Quinten, Emily, and James, as noted in an obituary published by Sullivan Family Home.
“Brett and Melissa were pillars of their community. They served as strong and fearless role models, leaving a lasting impact on many lives. Brett was known for his infectious enthusiasm, innovative spirit, and dedicated work ethic, while Melissa was a beacon of positivity and support for those around her,” the obituary reflects.
Originally from Michigan, Melissa met Brett, who hailed from California, during their time at Northwestern University, where they both pursued studies in engineering.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time at Sullivan Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 30, starting with a mass at St. Isaac Jogues Church, followed by a memorial in Hinsdale.
