Parineeti Chopra on Triumphs and Tribulations: The Essential Role of Networking in Bollywood
Parineeti Chopra has openly acknowledged her past challenges in the film industry, attributing some of her setbacks to a lack of knowledge on navigating the competitive landscape of Bollywood.
Since her emergence in the film world with the 2011 release of ‘Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl,’ Parineeti has experienced a notable career trajectory. While she has enjoyed considerable acclaim for her performances in films like ‘Ishaqzaade’ and ‘Hasee Toh Phasee,’ she recently reflected on the evolution in the industry’s dynamics, particularly regarding how new actors approach their careers. According to Parineeti, the current crop of talent has a clear understanding of the networking essentials crucial for success in the entertainment sector. She candidly confessed that she faced numerous challenges partly because she lacked this insight into the industry’s unwritten rules.
In a conversation with Mashable Middle East, Parineeti described her perspective as different from what one might expect of a typical actor. “I don’t view myself as someone who constantly thinks like an actor. I was unfamiliar with the casting processes or industry connections,” she stated. As she reminisced about her early days, it became evident that her singular focus was on acting, without the distractions of promotions or release logistics, which set her apart from the more strategically-minded newcomers.
“The newcomers today seem to have significantly more preparation. They understand who to reach out to, the importance of social gatherings, and who to befriend in a way I hadn’t embraced,” she remarked. Parineeti acknowledged that her initial approach, while genuine and well-intentioned, may have contributed to her earlier struggles in building a robust professional network. Her passion was centered on her craft, but she now recognizes the importance of understanding the broader industry game, which she is still learning.
Reflecting on her debut projects, she shared how the filming of both ‘Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl’ and ‘Ishaqzaade’ occurred in quick succession, leaving her unaware of which film would hit theaters first. “After finishing ‘Ishaqzaade,’ when people informed me it was my debut as a lead, I was surprised since I never considered the dynamics of casting that way,” she explained. She recalled the initial indifference she had towards accolades, including winning a National Award for her role. “At that time, I was focused on simply continuing with my work,” she added.
Recently, Parineeti starred in Imtiaz Ali’s film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila,’ featuring alongside Diljit Dosanjh. As she continues to progress in her career, her insights into the necessity of networking serve as a crucial reminder of how the entertainment landscape has transformed.
