Welcome to Reality Derby, our in-depth weekly analysis of reality television, hosted by Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson.

This week, we’re thrilled to have Parvati Shallow, famously known as the Black Widow, who recently finished fourth in Season 2 of Deal or No Deal Island. A veteran of four Survivor seasons, she notably clinched victory in Survivor: Micronesia — Fans vs. Favorites and emerged as one of the infamous villains in The Traitors Season 2. Parvati is set to appear next on Survivor: Australia v The World, which premieres in July on Australia’s Network 10. Curious about her insights on America’s Survivor 50? Don’t miss our video interview above.

Reflecting on her Black Widow persona, Parvati describes it as “a representation of a woman who confidently embraces being strategic, daring, and unafraid to sever connections with loved ones when the game’s stakes are high.” This character first emerged during her winning run in her 16th season of Survivor, and she acknowledges that this compelling alter ego continues to influence her. “I’ve accepted it now, as I can’t seem to escape it,” she admits.

Parvati shares her fondness for her close-knit alliance on Deal or No Deal Island, which included her “husband,” David Genat, and her “son,” Dickson Wong. “I cherished that family bond!” she enthuses. “The most effective alliances blossom naturally rather than being forced.” Her connection with Dickson, a dedicated fan from Survivor, and David, celebrated as the “golden god” of Australian Survivor, seemed to align perfectly.

However, she candidly acknowledges the cutthroat nature of the game, stating, “Had I needed to eliminate David or Dickson to secure a win, I would have done so without hesitation. My focus was solely on victory. I’m not participating to facilitate others’ success; I’m here to win! Personal relationships come secondary in this context. I operate on the principle of ‘ask for forgiveness, not permission.'” With a grin, she adds, “I’d definitely apologize later.”

Throughout the season, Parvati experienced a fair share of fortune, culminating in a challenging encounter with the Banker during the pivotal episode. She admits to making a miscalculated deal that led to her elimination. “Luck is an unpredictable factor in the game,” she reflects, contrasting it with the elements of nature found in Survivor. She elaborates, “In DONDI, our basic needs are taken care of, so we don’t endure the same hardships. However, during challenges, the sequence of events, chosen suitcases, and partnerships play a crucial role. Many variables are at play on Deal or No Deal, favoring those who can relinquish control.”

With the DONDI finale approaching on March 25 on NBC, Parvati expresses eagerness about reliving the experience. “The final temple experience was overwhelming in the best way,” she shares. “It felt like a spiritual awakening, akin to a church revival. Emotions ran high, with participants feeling ecstatic and some even expressing themselves through rapturous speech!”

Parvati also reminisces about the humorous mispronunciations of her name she’s encountered over the years, including “Havarti,” “Parmesan,” “Poverty,” and “Pavarotti,” sharing a laugh about it.

Looking back at her time on Survivor: Winners at War, which she felt was not her strongest showing, she contemplates her potential return for Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans. “I think it would be tough for me,” she anticipates, “since it seems that players aren’t eager to partner with me as they once did. Thus, I feel less inclined to compete.” In contrast, she describes her upcoming role in Survivor: Australia v The World as comparable to the “Olympics of Survivor” and expects it to be an exhilarating adventure.

In closing, Parvati expresses support for Natalie Bolton, hoping to see her back in Survivor 50, as she considers her one of her “Black Widow Brigade sisters.” What are your thoughts on Parvati’s journey through Deal or No Deal Island Season 2?
