Pastor T.D. Jakes
Taking A Step Back From Church …
Months After Scary Medical Episode
Published April 27, 2025 3:33 PM PDT
Pastor T.D. Jakes is stepping back from his leadership role in his megachurch, following a serious medical incident that occurred during a service. He recently announced the appointment of his successors to lead The Potter’s House church, a congregation he established in 1996.
During a service this past Sunday, Jakes revealed that his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Toure Roberts, would be taking on his responsibilities as he transitions to a different role.
In a thoughtful statement regarding his decision, Jakes underscored his commitment to addressing pressing economic challenges and expressed a desire to bridge gaps between community needs, cultural contexts, and corporate partnerships. He emphasized his goal of positioning the nation for a more prosperous future.
Despite stepping back from leadership, T.D. Jakes reassured his congregation that he will continue his ministry work, believing it is essential to empower the next generation to guide The Potter’s House forward.

Although Jakes mentioned his future plans, he did not delve into his ongoing health issues. This announcement comes less than six months after he experienced a medical incident while preaching, where he nearly lost consciousness onstage.
In November, Jakes faced a grave situation during a sermon, prompting immediate concern among his congregation as he unexpectedly sank into a chair.
Following this incident, he received an outpouring of support from his followers and later shared that he had undergone emergency surgery to address the troubling health issue, referring to his recovery as a “miracle.”
As Jakes steps back from his leadership role, he aims to prioritize his health while still remaining engaged in his ministry, signaling that he is not ready for full retirement just yet.
