Mae Martin’s New Series and Patrick J. Adams’ Unique Role in ‘Young Werther’
Mae Martin, a well-known figure in the comedy scene, is taking bold steps in her career, transitioning from stand-up to television excellence. Following the success of her Netflix series Feel Good, she is now working on an eagerly awaited miniseries titled Wayward. Set in a picturesque town filled with hidden truths, the series promises a blend of charm and intrigue, as noted by Netflix.
The ensemble cast includes notable talents like Toni Collette from Juror No. 2 and Patrick J. Adams, recognized for his role in Suits. As Adam promotes his upcoming film, Young Werther, he shared his insights about Wayward and Martin’s exceptional capabilities. “I have not yet even been told what I’m allowed to say or not, so I’ll be very careful. But I will say Mae’s a genius. And my time on that set, while pretty short, was wonderful,” Adams remarked. He expressed excitement for the project, stating, “It’s a really crazy story, and I think people are gonna love it.”
Exploring the Role of ‘The Perfect Foil’ in ‘Young Werther’
In the meantime, Adams shines in Young Werther, portraying Albert, the fiancé of Charlotte, played by Alison Pill. The narrative unfolds a love triangle involving the infatuated young writer Werther, interpreted by Douglas Booth. Notably, Adams’ character diverges from the typical roles seen in romantic triangles; he is presented not as a villain, but rather as a genuinely affable individual whom Werther respects.
“Most actors would probably not be drawn to somebody who is just, like, really nice and pretty simple. Like, it’s a weird thing, and it’s a testament to José and how great he is at what he does,” Adams commented. “It feels very modern in that there can be a character whose likability and his lack of controversial or negative emotions make him difficult to deal with. Like, it makes [Albert] the perfect foil.”
Adams further elaborated on Albert’s role, emphasizing how his admirable qualities escalate the emotional stakes in the story. “If he were Bradley Cooper from Wedding Crashers, if he were angry and manipulative and trying to undo Werther, then Werther would kind of have what he wanted. You know, he’d have this villain that he could play against. But it’s [Albert’s] absolute simplicity and joy, and his desire to support his family — like, he’s just a good guy. And that could have been so boring. And somehow, thanks to José, it wasn’t, and it leaped off the page.”
Now released by Lionsgate, Young Werther is available in theaters as well as on digital platforms. Viewers can access the film for rent or purchase through various avenues such as YouTube, Google Play, and Apple TV. For those interested, here’s a link to watch the film:
