Chiefs Move Closer to Historic Three-Peat in NFL Playoffs
The Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of achieving a remarkable feat in NFL history by aiming to win three consecutive Super Bowls. With their latest victory, they are now just two wins away from this unprecedented achievement.
In a standout performance during the divisional round, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes passed for 177 yards and threw a touchdown, leading his team to a 23-12 win over the Houston Texans. This victory marks Mahomes’ seventh consecutive trip to the AFC championship game.
Mahomes’ achievement comes just days after the arrival of his daughter, Golden Raye, born on January 12. Despite the personal celebrations, Mahomes was focused and ready to contribute to his team’s success.
Chiefs’ Star Players Shine
In the same game, tight end Travis Kelce showcased his skills by catching seven passes for 117 yards and scoring a touchdown. Notably, Kelce had support from his girlfriend, pop icon Taylor Swift, who attended the game alongside WNBA star Caitlin Clark to cheer for the team.
This season, the Chiefs joined an elite group as the fourth team in NFL history to advance to a conference championship game after winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Historically, the three previous teams in this situation did not win their next playoff game, a trend the Chiefs aim to break when they compete at Arrowhead Stadium against either the Buffalo Bills or the Baltimore Ravens next weekend, both of whom are vying for the chance to challenge the defending champions.
Mahomes Continues to Break Records
With this latest victory, Mahomes improved his playoff record to 16-3, tying him with NFL legend Joe Montana for the second-most playoff wins in history, trailing only Tom Brady. Mahomes remains undefeated at 7-0 in divisional playoff games, also playing a significant role in helping head coach Andy Reid secure his milestone 300th career victory.
The Texans, who ended the season with an 11-8 record, struggled to find their rhythm in the playoffs. This defeat extends their playoff woes, as they remain winless in six divisional playoff appearances, with two of those losses coming against the Chiefs.
Despite a valiant effort from Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud, who threw for 245 yards under duress, the team faced challenges, including a relentless Chiefs defense that sacked him eight times. Running back Joe Mixon provided some offensive spark, rushing for 88 yards and scoring a touchdown. However, the Texans were hindered by missed opportunities, including a blocked field goal and a failing extra-point attempt by kicker Kai’imi Fairbairn that dashed their hopes of a comeback.
