Kenya Football Federation Launches Investigation into Match Manipulation Allegations Against Goalkeeper
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is currently investigating serious allegations involving goalkeeper Patrick Matasi, who stands accused of engaging in match manipulation activities.
At 37 years old, Matasi plays for Kakamega Homeboyz in the Kenyan Premier League and has represented his nation with over 30 caps. His last appearance for the Harambee Stars occurred in October of the previous year during a qualifying match for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
A video emerged online—though unverified by BBC—that seemingly shows Matasi making an agreement to influence a league match’s outcome. The authenticity of this footage remains uncertain.
Cleophas Shimanyula, the owner of Homeboyz, spoke to BBC Sport Africa about the situation, expressing that Matasi was equally taken aback by the video’s content and staunchly denied any involvement in match-fixing.
In response to the allegations, the FKF indicated its commitment to working closely with FIFA, the Confederation of African Football, and other pertinent authorities throughout the investigation process.
The federation reiterated its strong stance against match manipulation, emphasizing, “We reaffirm our zero-tolerance policy on match manipulation and are committed to safeguarding the credibility of our competitions.” The FKF aims to ensure that the investigation aligns with its own anti-match manipulation regulations as well as FIFA’s guidelines, promising a fair, transparent, and thorough inquiry.
Furthermore, the FKF assured that the rights of both Matasi and his club would be respected, with appropriate actions to be determined based on the investigation’s outcomes.
BBC Sport Africa has reached out to Matasi for his perspective on the allegations.
