New England Patriots’ Christian Barmore Diagnosed with Blood Clots
The New England Patriots have officially announced that defensive tackle Christian Barmore has been diagnosed with blood clots and is currently receiving treatment at Mass General Brigham Hospital.
This alarming diagnosis will sideline Barmore, who was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, for an indefinite period. The team expressed their primary concern for Barmore’s health in a statement, emphasizing the high-quality healthcare available at the treatment facility.
“Our principal concern at this time is Christian’s health and well-being,” the Patriots stated. “Fortunately, Mass General Brigham Hospital provides some of the best healthcare in the world.” Additionally, the team noted that while there is no set timetable for his return, they are optimistic about his recovery.
Nicole Lynn, Barmore’s agent, expressed her gratitude toward the Patriots’ head trainer, Jim Whalen, for his prompt action that likely prevented a more serious outcome. “I would be remiss if I did not thank the Patriots’ trainer, Jim Whalen, for his absolute diligence and care over the last couple of days,” Lynn shared on social media. “Today could have looked a lot different without Jim’s persistence and expertise.”
According to reports from NFL Network, Barmore initially believed that a bruise on the back of his calf was inconsequential. However, Whalen insisted that it be examined further, a decision that proved crucial. “Had this gone untreated, it could’ve been the worst for Christian Barmore,” said Ian Rapoport on Sunday.
Barmore, who celebrated his 25th birthday on July 28, enjoyed a breakout season in 2023, achieving a personal record of 8.5 sacks and 64 combined tackles across 17 games, six of which he started. His performance was significant enough to prompt the Patriots to extend his contract for four years, which could reach a maximum of $92 million, including $41.8 million guaranteed at signing before he began the last year of his rookie deal.
Expected to be a starting player in the upcoming season, Barmore’s immediate focus, however, remains on his health rather than football. The Patriots have had experience with similar health issues in the past; veteran center David Andrews was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs in 2019. Andrews made a successful return to play in 2020 and continues to be an integral part of the team, now entering his 10th season.
Throughout his NFL career, Barmore has recorded a total of 12.5 sacks, 133 combined tackles, one forced fumble, and 18 tackles for loss over three seasons.
