Patti Smith is set to release her long-awaited memoir, Bread of Angels, which chronicles her formative years, her marriage to Fred “Sonic” Smith, and her journey back to the written word after a significant period of reflection.
Taking nearly ten years to bring to fruition, Smith describes the memoir as a blend of “the beauty and sorrow of a lifetime.” In a recent statement, Smith expressed her desire for readers to find something meaningful within its pages. This memoir is noted to be her most personal yet, guiding readers through her teenage years, her creative ventures that led to her iconic albums such as Horses and Easter, and the early days of her marriage to Fred as they began to raise a family together.
The narrative intertwines themes of loss and resilience, as described in the book synopsis. It reflects on Smith’s experiences of profound grief and gratitude, all while she navigated motherhood and the challenges of rebuilding her life. Ultimately, it highlights her unwavering commitment to writing—an enduring pursuit that transformed her painful experiences into beauty and hope.
Smith shared her enthusiasm about the book’s release on Instagram, posting a photograph with her parents and commenting, “This is with my mother and father who inspired much of my next book Bread of Angels. The memoir, a bright and dark dance of life.” Readers can look forward to its publication on November 4 through Random House.
