Paul Feig Discusses Potential Sequel for ‘Jackpot!’
Director Paul Feig is stepping into the world of sequels with his latest project, Another Simple Favor, a follow-up to his successful 2018 film featuring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. Critics have responded favorably to the film since its premiere at SXSW, although Feig typically prefers creating original content. However, he has expressed interest in developing sequels for a few of his earlier films, notably his 2024 action comedy featuring John Cena, Jackpot!.
In an interview with Screen Rant at the premiere of Another Simple Favor, Feig shared his enthusiasm for the potential of sequels, particularly for Jackpot! and his 2015 film Spy starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham. When asked about a sequel to either movie, he was grateful to hear of interest in a follow-up to Jackpot! and revealed he has ideas ready to expand the story.
“Thank you for that! Jackpot 2 – you really made my day,” Feig exclaimed. “I loved Jackpot!. Critics may not have favored it, but I enjoyed the project immensely. I already have a concept for the storyline of Jackpot 2. Although I’m not keen on turning all my films into sequels, I feel these two would greatly benefit from a follow-up.”
‘Jackpot!’ Receives Mixed Reviews
While Feig is open to the idea of Jackpot! 2, fans shouldn’t expect a sequel in the near future. The original film, which tells the story of a former child star winning a staggering $3.6 billion lottery while facing deadly threats in a future version of California, received various reactions. Despite its chart-topping performance on Prime Video, the film has not resonated well with audiences or critics, maintaining a mere 31% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a slightly higher audience score of 51%. MovieWeb’s Richard Fink described it as a film that fails to fulfill its ambitious goals. However, Feig has suggested that many critics may have misunderstood the film’s comedic intent.
“From what I gathered in reviews, it seems critics were searching for deeper meanings in the plot,” Feig observed. “The premise was inspired by classic Jackie Chan films—it’s just a setup for a humorous character thrown into chaos without clarity on what’s happening; there’s a heartwarming aspect as backstories unfold. I’m not attempting to make some grand statement about society; I’m simply aiming to create comedy.”
You can currently stream Jackpot! on Prime Video, with Another Simple Favor set to premiere on May 1. Additionally, Feig’s upcoming psychological thriller, The Housemaid, featuring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, will be released in theaters on December 25, 2025.
