Designer Paul Tazewell has drawn from a triad of influential sources to craft the vibrant costumes for the much-anticipated adaptation of *Wicked*. In a recent interview with Vogue, Tazewell shared that his design inspiration stems from Gregory Maguire’s original novel, the celebrated 1939 film *The Wizard of Oz*, and the Broadway musical itself.
“It was crucial to resonate with the audience while staying true to the essence of *Wicked*,” Tazewell explained, emphasizing the importance of incorporating familiar elements from the stage production.
One key creation is Glinda’s iconic “bubble dress,” which has become synonymous with the character. Ariana Grande praised Tazewell’s brilliance, stating, “His shapes, color narratives, and the thoughtfulness behind each design are remarkable.” Tazewell’s vision for Grande’s costume was influenced by butterflies and the Fibonacci (or Golden) spiral, adding a unique artistic touch.
Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba, has a history of collaboration with Tazewell, having previously worked together on the 2019 film *Harriet*. Erivo highlighted their mutual understanding of expressing character through clothing, noting that Tazewell is receptive to her input on adjustments to her costumes. Early in the film, Elphaba is depicted in outfits that include bark cloth, mushroom pleats, and a mourning dress, offering a striking contrast to Glinda’s vibrant wardrobe. Costume designer Susan Hilferty previously crafted the costumes for the Broadway version of *Wicked*, earning both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for her distinguished work.
