Wicked Film Triumphs at BAFTA Awards
This past weekend, the film adaptation of Wicked achieved notable success at the BAFTA Film Awards, claiming both the Best Costume Design and Best Production Design awards. The recognition highlights the film’s impressive artistry and creativity.
Costume Designer Paul Tazewell, who has previously won a Tony Award, took to the stage to accept his award. In his emotional speech, Tazewell referred to director Jon M. Chu as a “visionary director,” reflecting on the exhilarating experience of collaborating with him. He described the creative journey as “like jumping on the train right behind Elphaba and Glinda, and riding into Emerald City as we charged through with Jon as our conductor.” Tazewell’s remarkable work on the film has also earned him a nomination for an Academy Award.
Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales, who accepted the award for Best Production Design, expressed their gratitude as well. Crowley described the experience as “probably the greatest highlight of our careers” and praised Chu, labeling him a “wonderful director and such a generous person.” Both Crowley and Sandales are also nominated for an Academy Award for their contributions to the film.
The adaptation stars a talented ensemble, including Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, alongside Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, and Marissa Bode. The first installment of Wicked was released on November 22, 2024, with a sequel, Wicked: For Good, scheduled for November 21, 2025. Fans can now enjoy Wicked: Part One from the comfort of their homes.
