Rob Bresnahan Poised to Defeat Incumbent Matt Cartwright in Pennsylvania’s 8th District
Rob Bresnahan, the Republican candidate backed by former President Donald Trump, is projected to win against incumbent Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright in Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District, following early voting results reported on Election Day. Cartwright acknowledged Bresnahan’s lead and conceded the race late in the day.
Cartwright has been a fixture in Congress since 2013, initially representing Pennsylvania’s 17th District until the state underwent redistricting in 2018, prompting his transition to the 8th District. This district, situated in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania, encompasses Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, along with counties such as Wayne, Pike, and Lackawanna, as well as parts of Luzerne and Monroe counties.
The contest was especially noteworthy as Cartwright’s re-election campaign was one of the few that Democrats targeted for preservation after Trump won this district during the 2020 presidential election. In that election, Trump edged out Biden by a margin of 2.9 percentage points, and Cartwright triumphed over his Republican adversary by a slim margin of just over 7,000 votes out of nearly 287,000 cast.
Voter Sentiment in a Trump-stronghold
During his campaign, Cartwright focused on key issues such as economic improvement, reproductive rights, reforming the asylum process at the borders, and enhancing Social Security. In contrast, Bresnahan, a fifth-generation Luzerne County resident and CEO of Kuharchik Construction, centered his campaign message on border security, tax cuts, reducing government spending, job creation, and robust support for law enforcement.
Bresnahan secured Trump’s endorsement in April, with the former President praising him as a successful businessman committed to job creation and economic growth, contrasting him with Cartwright’s purported allegiance to the Democratic establishment.
Cartwright’s Political Positioning Under Scrutiny
As a moderate Democrat, Cartwright’s political alignment has faced scrutiny. Although he positions himself as a centrist, critics argue that his voting record does not align with this narrative. Reports indicate that he has frequently voted in favor of the policies advanced by Nancy Pelosi and has remained affiliated with the Congressional Progressive Caucus, raising questions about his claims of bipartisanship.
Bresnahan has been vocal about these concerns, alleging that Cartwright’s reported efforts to ally with both sides of the aisle do not hold up against his voting history, which he suggests aligns more closely with liberal agendas. In response, Cartwright’s campaign has touted his record of introducing bipartisan legislation, claiming he is one of the most effective Democrats in this regard.
