Perplexity has announced an update for its iOS application, introducing its AI voice assistant to iPhone users after a successful earlier launch on Android. This innovative voice assistant is designed to ease routine tasks by leveraging web browsing capabilities and the functionality of other apps. For example, if a user requests a table reservation at a particular restaurant, Perplexity can automatically open the OpenTable app with the reservation details—such as the number of diners, date, and time—pre-filled. Although the user must still click to finalize the booking, the initial steps are streamlined for convenience.
In addition to making reservations, the assistant can help users draft emails for designated contacts, set calendar reminders, and suggest local venues based on user preferences. This includes marking potential dining spots on a map, thus simplifying the decision-making process. Users can also instruct the assistant to conduct web searches for specific content, like locating particular videos that can be opened directly within the YouTube app.
According to a report from The Verge, one of the key advantages of Perplexity’s voice assistant is its compatibility with older iPhone models, contrasting with some other offerings like Apple Intelligence, which require newer devices. However, it should be noted that the iOS version currently lacks the capability to utilize the camera for real-time object recognition—a feature that is available on its Android counterpart. There is potential for this functionality to be incorporated for iPhone users in subsequent updates.
