Updated on March 18, 2025, authorities have made significant developments in the case surrounding the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a student from the University of Pittsburgh.
A Dominican Republic judge has granted permission for Joshua Riibe, the individual recognized as the last person to see Konanki, to return to the United States. This ruling allows Riibe to leave the island freely following a court hearing that lasted several hours.
During the hearing, Riibe expressed his desire to reunite with his family, stating, “I really want to be able to go home, talk to my family, give them hugs, tell them I miss them,” as reported by Noticias SIN, a local news outlet.
He further articulated his understanding of the legal proceedings, saying, “I understand I’m here to help, but it’s been 10 days and I can’t leave.” This statement reflects the emotional toll the situation has taken on him amid the ongoing investigation.
Notably, Riibe has not faced any criminal charges, and his legal representatives argued that his detention by the Punta Cana police was unwarranted and illegal. As a result of the judge’s decision, he is now permitted to depart the area.
In a disconcerting turn of events, Konanki remains unaccounted for since she was last seen on March 6. The search for her continues, with friends, family, and authorities actively seeking information regarding her whereabouts.
