Emmy Nominations Spotlight The Crown’s Enduring Appeal

From its initial release, “The Crown” has captivated Emmy voters, garnering an impressive tally of 21 wins and 87 nominations across all categories throughout its six-season run. Notably, in 2021, the Netflix series secured an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in a year when it faced no competition from the highly acclaimed “Succession.”

As the 76th Emmy Awards approach, “The Crown” finds itself once again nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, this time not competing against “Succession,” which has concluded its run. Instead, it faces stiff competition from FX’s “Shogun,” a series that has amassed 25 nominations and is currently viewed as a leading contender for the drama category.

This year, “The Crown” demonstrated its continued strength by earning 18 nominations. Alongside the drama series nod, key performers are recognized: Imelda Staunton for Lead Actress, Dominic West for Lead Actor, Elizabeth Debicki and Lesley Manville for Supporting Actress, and Jonathan Pryce for Supporting Actor.

The series’ creator, Peter Morgan, is nominated not only for the drama series but also for Outstanding Drama Writing. Recently, he discussed his thoughts and experiences in a conversation with Variety‘s Kate Aurthur. Topics included the challenges of portraying the events leading up to Princess Diana’s death, the impact of Queen Elizabeth’s passing in 2022 on the series’ conclusion, and the logistical hurdles of reuniting the three actresses who played the Queen for the finale—all while revealing his intention to take a step back from royal narratives for the foreseeable future.

As noted by Aurthur, “The Crown” has been recognized as one of the most ambitious television projects, with its inception dating back to 2014. The series, which debuted in 2016, chronicles Queen Elizabeth II’s life starting just before her ascension to the throne and continues through key historical milestones up to 2005, including the marriage of then-Prince Charles to Camilla Parker Bowles.

The breadth of the series is significant, featuring an evolving cast every two seasons—Claire Foy as the younger Queen, followed by Olivia Colman, and then Imelda Staunton. Throughout its narrative, the series illuminates how the Queen navigated not only a changing global landscape and a diminished British Empire but also the complexities of her own familial relationships.

In addition to “Shogun,” “The Crown” will also compete against other notable series in the drama category, including “Fallout” (Prime Video), “The Gilded Age” (Max), “The Morning Show” (Apple TV+), “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” (Prime Video), “Slow Horses” (Apple TV+), and “3 Body Problem” (Netflix).

As part of the Emmy conversation, Variety’s Adam B. Vary contributes insights during this week’s podcast episode, which also previews the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con and shares further thoughts on the Emmy nominations.
