Celtic’s Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda, and Nicolas Kuhn have earned nominations for the prestigious PFA Scotland Premiership Player of the Year award. This recognition, decided by votes from their peers, also includes Dundee striker Simon Murray.
As the captain, McGregor, who previously won the award in 2022, has demonstrated consistent excellence while guiding the team to a fourth consecutive league title. Thus far, he has made appearances in 31 of Celtic’s 34 league matches and has contributed eight goals.
Meanwhile, forward Maeda has had a stellar season, amassing 16 goals and nine assists from his 31 appearances. His versatility has been critical for the team, especially after striker Kyogo Furuhashi’s departure in January, leading Manager Brendan Rodgers to often employ him in a central attacking role.
Kuhn has also made significant contributions, appearing in 29 league matches during the season. He has scored 12 goals and provided eight assists, showcasing his best form particularly in the earlier part of the season.
On the flip side, Murray is tied with Maeda in pursuit of the Premiership’s top scorer accolade, having netted 16 goals himself. He has been instrumental in his team’s efforts to avoid relegation, participating in every league match since joining from Ross County last summer.
Young Player of the Year Nominees
Celtic’s Arne Engels has also been nominated for the Young Player of the Year award. After his club-record transfer from Augsburg last summer, the 21-year-old midfielder has scored nine goals and registered five assists in 31 appearances this season.
In contrast, Rangers’ Hamza Igamane could earn accolades for his commendable first season at Ibrox, scoring 11 goals in 30 league matches since his signing from AS Far Rabat.
The youngest nominee, James Wilson of Hearts, celebrated his 18th birthday in March and has already made an impact with five league goals since his debut last October.
Lennon Miller continues to display promise in midfield for Motherwell. Coming off a nomination last season, this 18-year-old has managed two goals and six assists, despite facing challenges this season, including a fractured ankle that sidelined him for six matches.
Adams Contends for Double Honor
The Women’s Player and Young Player of the Year shortlists have also been unveiled, featuring Hibernian’s 21-year-old forward Eilidh Adams, who is in contention for both titles. Alongside her, Emma Lawton from Celtic, Katie Wilkinson of Rangers, and Samantha van Diemen from Glasgow City are nominated for the Player of the Year, while Erin Husband of Hearts and Laura Berry and Hannah Jordan from the Spartans are up for Young Player.
Currently, Hibs lead the SWPL, holding a two-point advantage over Rangers, with Glasgow City trailing by an additional point.
Vote for Goal of the Season
As the Scottish Premiership season approaches its climax, fans now have the opportunity to vote for the goal of the season. Candidates include Aberdeen’s Topi Keskinen and Kevin Nisbet, along with Celtic’s McGregor, Maeda, Reo Hatate, and Cameron Carter-Vickers, as well as Simon Murray of Dundee, Louis Moult of Dundee United, Jack Iredale from Hibernian, Hamza Igamane of Rangers, Akil Wright from Ross County, and Mikael Mandron of St Mirren.
