Grillo’s Hole-in-One Highlights WM Phoenix Open
Emiliano Grillo’s stunning hole-in-one on the famed 16th hole ignited frenzied celebrations at the WM Phoenix Open, part of the PGA Tour. This electrifying moment unfolded as Thomas Detry established a commanding two-stroke lead following the second round of the tournament.
Grillo achieved a remarkable 155-yard ace, with his ball gently circling the hole before finally dropping in, eliciting roars from the crowd. The Argentinian golfer didn’t hold back, jubilantly sprinting around the tee box to share the excitement with his caddie and fellow competitors, Rafael Campos and Seamus Power. True to the unique atmosphere of the event, spectators responded by showering the tee and green with beer and other refreshments, celebrating the first hole-in-one at this iconic location since 2022 when Sam Ryder and Carlos Ortiz took home the honors.
Detry Surges Ahead
Amid the festivities, Grillo logged a two-under-par score of 69, bringing his total to two under for the tournament and just managing to stay above the cut line.
Detry Leads in Phoenix After Seven-Under Second Round
Meanwhile, leader Thomas Detry also flirted with an ace on the 16th, landing his shot just two feet from the hole before converting for a birdie. Detry’s impressive performance on the day featured a total of eight birdies, showcasing his dominance with three consecutive birdies starting from the ninth hole and finishing strong with two additional gains to reach a total score of 12 under for the tournament.
Following Detry are Alex Smalley and Michael Kim, who are tied for second place at ten under. They are closely pursued by a trio of players, including Tom Kim, Jordan Spieth—who made eagle on both the 13th and 15th holes—and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, one stroke further back.
Among the notable competitors is Justin Thomas, part of a five-player group sitting at eight under par. He is slightly ahead of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who managed an impressive, blemish-free five-under 66 in Arizona on Friday. Scheffler, who recently returned to competitive play at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am after a hand injury, is looking to make a strong comeback.
