Karl Vilips Makes History with Victory at Puerto Rico Open
Karl Vilips has made headlines after receiving a last-minute invitation to The Players and achieving a remarkable win at the Puerto Rico Open, marking him as the first golfer to don Tiger Woods’ apparel brand while achieving victory on the PGA Tour.
In only his fourth start on the PGA Tour and third since turning professional, Vilips showcased his talent with a superb eight-under 64 in the final round at Grand Reserve Golf Club, finishing the tournament at an impressive 26 under, clinching victory by three shots.
The 23-year-old joined Woods’ “Sun Day Red” brand as an ambassador just last month and became the first to win on the PGA Tour while sporting the brand. Following his significant win, Vilips reported receiving supportive messages from Woods himself during and after the event.
“It was tough because I got on my phone after the round and I was just scrolling, like who was texting me?” Vilips shared regarding the emotional aftermath of his victory. “I got one from a random number that called me as well. Then there was a voicemail saying it’s Tiger, and I couldn’t like process it in the moment. I was just trying to think – I’ll get back to that later. That’s pretty cool.”
Reflecting on his recent deal with Sun Day Red, Vilips added, “I signed it three weeks ago, so not too long since a Sun Day Red player has got a win. I think it’s really special. I think it shows me that there’s a reason why they chose me to represent their brand, and I’m just happy to be able to do it in a way that reflects who I am.”
This victory guarantees Vilips a spot in The Players at TPC Sawgrass and the prestigious PGA Championship in May. Additionally, he will enjoy a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour, providing him with significant opportunities moving forward.
“I’m just excited to sleep in my own bed, cook my own meals, and be with my roommates,” remarked Vilips about his participation in The Players, noting his recent move to Jacksonville. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. I’ve never really had a chance to do a home tournament. It’s been looking really good. The last time I played it was three weeks ago, so I’m sure by now it’s in pristine shape, and I’m really excited.”
“That was the big goal; I wanted to get into The Players, and I knew I had to win this week to do it. It’s just a dream come true to be able to play in that tournament,” he continued.
Vilips faced stiff competition from Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, who made a remarkable charge, bagging six consecutive birdies to open the back nine and closing with a 63. Neergaard-Petersen briefly took the lead after Vilips made a bogey on the 12th hole, but Vilips quickly responded.
Without losing his composure, Vilips birdied the next three holes, showcasing his skills with a clever pitch that set up a birdie on the 14th, allowing him to reclaim the lead. A final birdie on the 18th hole solidified his victory, with Neergaard-Petersen finishing in second. Joseph Bramlett trailed five strokes behind in third, while amateur Kieron Van Wyk shared fourth with Steven Fisk.
