The World Soundtrack Awards will honor the esteemed American composer Philip Glass with a Lifetime Achievement Award at their 25th annual ceremony on October 15. This recognition will take place alongside a film music concert that concludes the Film Fest Gent’s three-day Film Music Days 2025, scheduled for October 16 in Ghent, Belgium.
In past years, notable figures such as Marvin Hamlisch, John Barry, Giorgio Moroder, and Elliot Goldenthal have also received this prestigious award, reflecting the rich legacy of contributions to film music by these talented composers. (See the complete list of past honorees below.)
The tribute to Glass will be part of a concert titled “Minimalism in Motion: Glass, Nyman and Beyond,” which will occur at the Muziekcentrum De Bijloke. The Brussels Philharmonic, under the direction of conductor Dirk Brossé, will perform a selection of Glass’s iconic works. Brossé is personally connected to the composer, having presented him with the award during a ceremony in New York.
Although Glass initially gained fame for his operatic compositions and symphonies, he has made significant strides in the realm of film scoring, earning three Academy Award nominations for his original scores for Kundun, The Hours, and Notes on a Scandal.
At 88 years old, Glass’s accolades extend beyond his Oscar nominations. His illustrious career includes a BAFTA Award, a Drama Desk Award, and a Golden Globe Award, among other honors. Furthermore, he has received nominations for four Grammy Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award. In recognition of his artistic contributions, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1995, the National Medal of Arts in 2010, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2018, culminating with a Trustees Award from the Recording Academy in 2020.
Glass’s achievements were previously acknowledged at the World Soundtrack Awards in 2007 when he received two nominations for his work on Notes on a Scandal.
This year, the Film Music Days events will take place from October 14 to 16, coinciding with Film Fest Gent, which runs from October 8 to 19. Tickets for the concert are currently available through filmfestgent.be and worldsoundtrackawards.com.
