Critical Incident at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport Involves Aircraft Tug and Plane

CHICAGO (CBS) — A serious accident took place Saturday night at O’Hare International Airport, where an aircraft tug collided with a plane, leading to critical injuries for one worker. The incident occurred as Air Wisconsin Flight 6181 was nearing a gate after landing.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the incident unfolded around 7:35 p.m. local time. The regional airline, Air Wisconsin, operates flights for American Airlines under the American Eagle branding.

According to Chicago police, the aircraft tug overturned following the impact with the plane’s wing, leaving the driver trapped beneath it. The 64-year-old driver sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment for head and lower body injuries.

The aircraft involved was a Bombardier CRJ-200 that had just arrived from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the passengers, and the Chicago Department of Aviation indicated that the incident did not significantly disrupt airport operations.

Following the collision, all passengers were safely evacuated from the plane and transported to the terminal via bus. In a statement, an American Airlines spokesperson emphasized the airline’s commitment to safety, stating, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and team members, and we are reviewing this incident.”

The tug involved in the collision was operated by a United Airlines employee. The airline has stated that it is dedicated to ensuring the driver receives necessary support and care following the accident.

The FAA has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the collision, underscoring the importance of safety in airport operations.

This incident follows a tragic series of aviation accidents, including a recent helicopter crash in Philadelphia that resulted in seven fatalities. Just days before, another airplane collision involving an American Airlines jet and a Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport led to the deaths of all 67 individuals on board.
