Tragic Plane Crash Near Copake, N.Y., Claims Life of One
A small aircraft with six individuals on board crashed in an open field close to Copake, New York, on Saturday, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Columbia County Undersheriff Jacqueline Salvatore confirmed in a press briefing that at least one person died in the incident, though the exact number of survivors remains undetermined. Confirmation on the remaining passengers’ conditions is pending further investigation.
Salvatore indicated that the aircraft did not collide with any structures during its descent. However, accessing the crash site has proven challenging due to muddy terrain. As of Saturday afternoon, the specific cause of the crash has not been identified, and Salvatore stated investigations are ongoing.
Emergency responders from the sheriff’s department, alongside representatives from the New York State Police and a local fire department, arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a 911 call around noon.
The downed aircraft, identified as a Mitsubishi MU-2B-40, was reportedly en route to Columbia County Airport in Hudson, New York, according to FAA records.
Flight tracking data from FlightAware reveals that the plane took off from Westchester County Airport shortly after 11:30 a.m., with an expected landing time at 12:06 p.m. The flight’s trajectory was interrupted, with the plane veering east before the incident.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is set to spearhead the investigation, with a specialized team expected to arrive at the crash site on Saturday evening to determine the circumstances behind the tragic event.
