WASHINGTON (AP) — An Air Force aircraft transporting Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair Sen. Jim Risch to Germany for the Munich Security Conference had to return to Washington on Thursday due to a mechanical problem.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the incident, stating, “This evening, en route from Washington to Munich, the plane on which Secretary Rubio is flying experienced a mechanical issue.”

She further noted, “The plane has turned around and is returning to Joint Base Andrews,” emphasizing that the Secretary remains determined to proceed with his travel plans to Germany and the Middle East using an alternate aircraft.

Reports indicate that the problem pertained to the cockpit windshield of the C-32, a modified Boeing 757, arising approximately 90 minutes after departure from Joint Base Andrews.

Despite Rubio’s intention to continue his trip, uncertainty lingers over whether this setback will hinder his ability to attend a planned meeting with Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, scheduled for Friday morning in Munich.
