Behind the Scenes of Poker Face Season 2: Insights from the Cast and Crew

The vibrant cast and dedicated crew behind Peacock’s acclaimed comedy Poker Face gathered for an engaging PaleyFest premiere of Season 2 at Hollywood’s iconic Dolby Theatre on March 29. Attendees were treated to a sneak peek of the first episode, titled “The Game is a Foot,” featuring the talented Cynthia Erivo in the unique role of troubled quintuplets. While reviews are currently under embargo with the episode set to debut on May 8 via Peacock, the audience response was overwhelmingly positive, filled with laughter, surprise, and enthusiastic applause.

Following the screening, Emmy nominee Aidy Bryant moderated a lively Q&A panel that included star and executive producer Natasha Lyonne, creator and director Rian Johnson, director Clea DuVall, and various guest stars from both Season 1 and Season 2. Notable attendees included Judith Light, who previously secured an Emmy for her performance, as well as fellow Season 2 guests GaTa, Haley Joel Osment, John Cho, Kumail Nanjiani, and Melanie Lynskey.

Though Erivo was unable to attend, her performance received high praise, setting a positive tone for the discussion that followed. The panel’s initial icebreaker question, centered on their favorite holiday, sparked lighthearted exchanges, revealing Thanksgiving as the crowd favorite.

Rian Johnson shared insights into the creative process, stating, “We aimed to replicate the success of Season 1 but to do it on a grander scale. Instead of focusing on a long narrative arc for Charlie, the goal was to create extraordinary, standalone episodes.” He highlighted the ambitious production schedule, noting that the premiere was shot in just ten days, a feat considering the complexity of the script.

Johnson discussed the filming techniques used to portray Erivo’s five characters, explaining that no advanced filming technology was required. “We would alternate between scenes where Cynthia would perform half of a character’s part, switch costumes, and then return to complete the scene,” he explained. “Her ability to retain all the details while being delightful to work with was remarkable.”

Lyonne, acknowledging Johnson’s remarks, added, “Watching Rian work in his element during this episode was truly special. ‘The Game is a Foot’ is a quintessential Rian Johnson episode, showcasing his unique style and vision. It required elaborate methods to execute the intricacies of the narrative.”

In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Erivo expressed her enthusiasm for the challenge of playing multiple roles simultaneously, reflecting, “I was ready to explore how to embody different characters and see if I could balance them all at once. It was truly an exercise in compartmentalization.” She noted the collaboration with a stand-in to ensure her reactions remained consistent across scenes.

During the panel, Nanjiani shared his experience preparing for his role as “Gator Joe,” recalling, “When I got the script, I initially thought it was a mistake. The character demanded a specific accent, so I reached out to my dialect coach, eager to immerse myself in the role and embrace the challenge.”

Cho spoke about his role as a “villainous swindler” in an episode inspired by David Mamet’s film House of Games, praising Lynskey for her impressive dialogue performance. “It was a deep dialogue-heavy experience, which honestly turned out to be more enjoyable than we anticipated,” he remarked.

Osment, who plays a social media influencer in a wedding-themed episode, added humor by sharing his character’s sponsorship deal with an energy drink called “Ball-Zilla,” showcasing the series’ knack for blending humor with compelling narratives.

As the panel came to a close, Bryant joked about the significant number of guest stars featured this season, to which Lyonne cheekily added her own name to a hypothetical wish list of future guest stars, highlighting the fun and camaraderie within the cast.

Poker Face continues to follow the adventures of Lyonne’s character Charlie, who possesses an uncanny ability to detect when others are lying. This season, Charlie embarks on a new series of investigations as she encounters a diverse array of characters across the country.

Looking ahead, fans can anticipate the Season 2 premiere on May 8, 2025, showcasing three episodes initially, with new episodes available for streaming every Thursday thereafter.
