Polar Bear Attack in Auyuittuq National Park
On Thursday, a polar bear incident occurred involving a skier in Auyuittuq National Park, located on Baffin Island in Canada’s Arctic region. Bystanders quickly rushed to assist the skier, providing first aid and notifying Parks Canada about the situation.
Following the encounter, the group successfully transported the skier to the Summit Lake emergency shelter in Akshayuk Pass. Due to poor weather conditions, which hindered helicopter access, they used a snow machine to reach the nearby community of Pangnirtung.
The identity of the skier has not been disclosed, but reports indicate that they were discharged after a medical examination. Specific details regarding the nature of the skier’s injuries, the exact location and circumstances of the bear encounter, and how the bear was eventually deterred remain vague.

In response to the incident, Parks Canada has taken the decision to euthanize the polar bear, handing over the remains to the local hunters and trappers association. Although all visitors to Auyuittuq National Park receive a safety briefing from Parks staff and can carry deterrents like flares or bear spray, firearms are not authorized for independent travelers.
