Authorities in Pasadena are under scrutiny after police shot and killed a dog while attending to a situation involving a distressed woman on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m., when officers responded to a call reporting a woman lying on the ground by South Hudson Avenue and East California Boulevard, accompanied by an unleashed dog, as reported by CBS News.
According to police accounts, the woman was making “incoherent statements” at the scene. They stated that the dog became aggressive and charged at an officer before animal control and fire department personnel could arrive.
In response to the dog’s aggressive behavior, officers fatally shot the animal. The woman involved was subsequently taken to a hospital for evaluation, but fortunately, no other injuries were reported.
As of Thursday, the Pasadena Police Department had not provided any comments regarding the incident, despite inquiries from local media.
This incident has sparked conversations around police response protocols, especially in situations involving mental health crises and animals. Further scrutiny and evaluation of departmental procedures may be necessary to address the complexities of similar scenarios in the future.
The details of this incident were first reported by the Los Angeles Times.
