Police Shoot Menacing Attacker After Stabbing Incident in Brooklyn
A harrowing incident unfolded in Brooklyn, New York, where a man was critically injured after police officers intervened during a stabbing attack that left four young girls, believed to be his relatives, seriously wounded. The suspect, a 49-year-old man, was armed with a meat cleaver covered in blood when officers arrived at the scene on Sunday morning.
According to NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the officers were alerted to the emergency after an 11-year-old girl managed to call 911. She reported that she and her siblings were being attacked by their uncle. In a desperate bid for help, she sought refuge in a bedroom during the assault.
Responding swiftly, officers forced entry into the apartment located in the Bensonhurst neighborhood, encountering a disturbing scene described by Tisch as “horrific,” with blood splattered across the walls and floors. Upon entry, they commanded the suspect multiple times to drop the cleaver, but he refused to comply and instead advanced toward the officers.
In response to the imminent threat, two officers discharged their weapons, firing a total of seven rounds and hitting the assailant, effectively neutralizing the crisis. The police commissioner emphasized the importance of rapid response, stating that the officers’ actions likely saved the lives of the young girls involved.
The attack began around 10:15 a.m., and according to Tisch, a young boy related to the family played a key role in seeking assistance from neighbors, helping direct police to the location. Despite the chaos, the officers acted with urgency, entering the apartment just moments after arriving at the scene.
The four victims, sisters aged 8, 11, 13, and 16, were immediately transported to Maimonides Medical Center, where they are currently being treated for their injuries. Fortunately, all four are expected to survive their traumatic ordeal.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack. NYPD Chief of Department John Chell stated that detectives are working to confirm the familial relationship between the suspect and the victims. It has been reported that the children’s mother was not at home during the incident.
Relatives of the suspect have indicated that he struggles with mental health issues and has been living at the residence where the stabbing occurred. Initial investigations revealed that there were no prior calls for police service related to this address.
In addition to the meat cleaver, police discovered another kitchen knife at the scene, also stained with blood. Tisch confirmed that the entire incident, including the police shooting, was recorded on officers’ body cameras, providing vital evidence for the investigation.
