Police Implement Stop and Search Protocols for Edinburgh Derby
Three individuals were apprehended during the recent match between Hearts and Hibs at Tynecastle in December. In response to this, Police Scotland has been granted special authorities to conduct stop-and-search operations on fans ahead of the upcoming Edinburgh derby.
The purpose of these measures is to prevent potential football-related disturbances during the clash between Hibs and Hearts at Easter Road. Authorities have indicated that fans may be requested to remove clothing items that could be concealing their identities as part of this initiative.
Chief Superintendent David Robertson noted that these powers, which had previously been utilized to manage disturbances during Bonfire Night celebrations, are being temporarily reintroduced due to a rise in incidents of violence and disorder linked to football matches.
The enhanced measures will be enforced across multiple areas of the city, including the city center and Leith, from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM on Sunday. Chief Supt Robertson emphasized that the order will be implemented in a responsible manner, ensuring actions are justified to mitigate the risk of disorder and serious violence.
He stated, “In recent months, we have had to respond to multiple incidents of disorder and violence associated with football events in Edinburgh. Aggressive acts against police officers, possession of dangerous weapons, and attempts to evade law enforcement by disguising one’s identity will not be tolerated. Our priority is to maintain public safety.”
Robertson further highlighted the negative impact such behavior has on the local community and on the overwhelming majority of football fans who wish to enjoy these events without fear or unrest.
