Labour MP Mike Amesbury Involved in Altercation in Frodsham
A recent video has surfaced, seemingly depicting an incident involving Labour MP Mike Amesbury in Frodsham, Cheshire. The clip has drawn considerable attention, with Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson stating that the matter is now under police investigation.
In her remarks to Sky News’s Sunday With Trevor Phillips, Phillipson confirmed that Amesbury has engaged with law enforcement following the altercation. “Mike Amesbury, who’s the MP in question, has gone forward to the police,” she noted. “He is co-operating with any investigation they would want to take forward. It is a matter for the police, and we want to allow them to do that work.”
The footage appeared online on Saturday and shows Amesbury in a heated exchange with a man lying on the ground, reportedly during a disturbance in the town center. Eyewitnesses observed Amesbury shouting, “You won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?” indicating a confrontation that piqued public interest.
According to a spokesperson for Cheshire Police, officers responded to reports of an assault around 2:48 a.m. on October 26. The spokesperson stated that police are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and that inquiries are ongoing.
Amesbury released a statement on his Facebook account, explaining, “Last night I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened following an evening out with friends. This morning I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened. I will not be making any further public comment but will of course cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.”
A Labour Party representative confirmed awareness of the incident, adding that Amesbury proactively reported the occurrence to the police and will assist with their investigation.
The viral video, which has been widely circulated on social media, shows moments of chaos with some individuals attempting to pacify Amesbury, while others shouted in frustration, further escalating tensions. Earlier on the same day, Amesbury had engaged with local residents regarding community safety and policing, highlighting his ongoing commitment to public service.
This incident is not the first time Amesbury has faced unsettling situations. In July 2023, a court convicted a 56-year-old man of stalking and harassment against him, which had contributed to the MP’s increasing anxiety about public safety. The offender’s behavior included lingering outside Amesbury’s constituency office and confronting him in public spaces, drawing significant concern regarding the threats faced by elected officials.
