The Peskiko Group along with the Livingstone Landowners Group (LLG) has unveiled findings from a recent Leger poll indicating that support for coal mining in Alberta’s eastern slopes is notably low, with fewer than one in four residents in favor.
This survey, conducted in the previous month, engaged about 1,000 Albertans representing a wide range of demographics. Notably, it was found that 55 percent of participants were unaware of any current proposals for coal exploration in the area.
Understanding Public Opinion on Coal Mining
Among those surveyed, only 23 percent expressed support for coal exploration in the eastern slopes, while 27 percent believed the potential economic benefits justified the environmental hazards. Concerns about environmental impacts were significant; 77 percent of respondents voiced fears regarding possible selenium contamination in local watersheds, and 70 percent were apprehensive about coal dust dispersing from mining operations.
These results highlight a growing awareness and concern among the public regarding the environmental implications of coal mining, suggesting that many residents are prioritizing ecological preservation over economic gain. As discussions surrounding coal mining in Alberta continue, the sentiments reflected in this poll could influence future policy and development decisions.
