In a significant move aimed at boosting voter participation among young Canadians, Elections Canada has set up polling stations at 109 university and college campuses nationwide. This initiative comes in response to data revealing that only 47 percent of eligible voters aged 18 to 24 participated in the 2021 federal election. The agency hopes that the introduction of these campus polling stations will enhance turnout among young voters.
Leanne Nyirfa from Elections Canada stated, “We want to ensure that individuals who wish to vote have access to the necessary information and know where to go.” She added that this effort is designed to provide more options and help reduce the obstacles students might face when voting in a federal election.
Students are able to vote via special ballots, allowing them to cast their votes for their designated home ridings, irrespective of the location of their university. This flexibility aims to accommodate the diverse living situations of students across the country.
The Vote on Campus polling stations will be operational from April 13 to April 16, with the official election day scheduled for April 28.
