Pope Francis and Vice President JD Vance Hold Easter Meeting
Pope Francis welcomed U.S. Vice President JD Vance at the Casa Santa Marta on Easter Sunday, as confirmed by the Holy See Press Office. This brief encounter took place against the backdrop of the Pope’s ongoing recovery from a severe case of pneumonia.
During their meeting, Vance expressed his relief at seeing the Pope improving in health, stating, “I know you have not been feeling great, but it’s good to see you in better health.” In appreciation for the meeting, the Holy Father presented Vance with several large chocolate Easter eggs intended for Vance’s three young children, as well as a Vatican tie and rosaries.
According to reports, Vance’s motorcade spent a mere 17 minutes on Vatican property. The meeting comes amid ongoing discussions between the Pope and Vance, particularly concerning their differing views on immigration policies, especially those introduced during the Trump administration.
Pope Francis’ Easter Blessing
In a tradition that honors a global audience, Pope Francis also delivered the Urbi et Orbi blessing from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica later in the day. This event occurred at the conclusion of the Easter Mass, overseen by Cardinal Angelo Comastri in St. Peter’s Square.
The dialogue between Francis and Vance extended beyond personal pleasantries. A media statement from the Vatican noted that they reaffirmed their shared obligation to uphold religious freedom and conscience rights. The conversation further delved into pressing global issues, highlighting the plight of nations grappling with conflict, political strife, and humanitarian crises, particularly focusing on migrants, refugees, and incarcerated individuals.
Vatican Engagements
Despite facing health challenges, Pope Francis has significantly reduced his public engagements, recently appointing cardinal delegates for certain liturgical celebrations, including Easter Mass. His dedication to advocating for migrants remains a defining aspect of his papacy.
Vice President Vance, who embraced Catholicism in 2019, attended Easter Mass following his meeting with the Pope. He participated in the service at St. Paul Outside the Walls, a notable Roman basilica believed to be the burial site of the Apostle Paul, where he visited with his family.
In addition to his meeting with Pope Francis, Vance also engaged with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the foreign minister, further underscoring the significance of his visit to the Vatican.
