ROME (AP) — Pope Francis experienced a restful first night in the hospital following his admission for a respiratory infection. According to the Vatican, he was alert and engaged on Saturday, enjoying breakfast and reading the newspapers while continuing treatment.
At 88 years old, the Pope is facing health challenges that have become increasingly evident. He was hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday after a persistent bout of bronchitis worsened over the previous week. This marks his fourth hospital stay since becoming pope in 2013, sparking discussions about his declining health.
Initial examinations indicated that he is suffering from a respiratory tract infection along with a mild fever. In light of his condition, the Vatican has postponed all scheduled audiences through at least Monday.
