Port Vale Clinches Promotion to League One with Victory Over AFC Wimbledon
Port Vale achieved a significant milestone by securing automatic promotion to League One, triumphing over AFC Wimbledon with a 2-0 victory at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
The turning point came in the second half, where goals from Jayden Stockley and Jaheim Hedley solidified Vale’s position in the league’s top three and simultaneously hindered Wimbledon’s quest for a playoff spot.
Initially, Vale had the first scoring opportunity when Lorent Tolaj sent a shot over the bar from 12 yards out after receiving a well-placed cross from Ryan Croasdale.
In response, Wimbledon attempted to press forward, with Sam Hutchinson making a notable effort from the edge of the box, but his shot was expertly saved by Ben Amos just before halftime.
After the interval, Vale intensified their efforts and made their mark with a flurry of activity just after the hour mark.
In the 64th minute, Hedley took a free-kick that Stockley managed to deflect past the extend reach of Wimbledon’s goalkeeper Owen Goodman, marking the beginning of the goal tally.
Just three minutes later, Hedley found the net himself, finishing confidently after being assisted by George Byers.
Following the second goal, Wimbledon faced further setbacks as their manager, Johnnie Jackson, was shown a red card, complicating their attempts to mount a comeback. Vale maintained their composure to secure the victory, confirming their return to League One.
