Investigation Underway into the Deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa

The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office has announced an ongoing investigation into the recent deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. Their bodies, along with one of their dogs, were discovered in their home on Wednesday, prompting authorities to take swift action to determine the circumstances surrounding their passing.

A statement from the Sheriff’s Department indicated that investigators worked through the night to gather evidence from the scene. Notably, there were no visible signs of foul play observed at the time of their discovery. The couple’s remains were transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator for autopsy, where initial examinations revealed no external trauma. Furthermore, toxicology and carbon monoxide tests have been ordered for both Hackman and Arakawa.

The release emphasized, “The manner and cause of death has not been determined. The official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. This remains an open investigation.” The circumstances surrounding the deaths have raised suspicions, particularly after investigators found the front door to the residence ajar with no evidence of a carbon monoxide leak.

Documents acquired by “Extra” suggest that law enforcement views the situation as “suspicious.” The search warrant report described several concerning observations, including an unsecured front entrance, a healthy dog wandering on the property, another dog near Arakawa’s body, and a deceased dog found a short distance away. The report noted indications that Pill bottles were open with pills scattered near Arakawa, raising further questions about the scene’s conditions. In addition, it was observed that the domestic heater had been moved.

According to the details within the warrant, Betsy Arakawa was discovered on the bathroom floor next to the overturned pill bottle and a space heater. Remarkably, her body had begun to decompose, displaying signs such as bloating in the face and mummification in the extremities. Gene Hackman was located in a mudroom adjacent to the kitchen, where it seemed he may have collapsed suddenly, as his sunglasses were found nearby. The documents state that Hackman exhibited signs of death consistent with those of his wife.

While deputies noted the front door was open, they confirmed that the remainder of the residence was secured, showing no indications of forced entry. Additionally, there were no signs suggesting that the home had been tampered with. The New Mexico Gas Company has conducted tests on the gas lines associated with the residence and reported no issues related to gas pipes in the vicinity.

Reports indicate that two maintenance workers, who stumbled upon the scene, had not seen the couple for approximately two weeks prior to the discovery.
