The sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu’s acclaimed adaptation of Margaret Atwood‘s dystopian novel, is set to premiere on April 8. Recently, the cast and creative team held a reflective PaleyFest event at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, where they revisited memorable moments from the show’s previous five seasons.
Elisabeth Moss, not only the star of the series but also an executive producer, shared insights on her dual role as director for several episodes that have helped shape the show’s unique aesthetic. Moss expressed the realization of directing’s significance when she found herself orchestrating performances from her fellow actors. “Sometimes you’re like, ‘I hope my idea works,’ and then you get into rehearsal and realize that what matters most is capturing their performances on camera,” she remarked. “That’s my favorite aspect of directing. I didn’t anticipate that,” she added.
Echoing Moss’ sentiments, fellow Emmy winner Bradley Whitford also had the opportunity to direct episodes and seized the moment to commend Moss’s considerable talents. “She’s doing ‘Sophie’s Choice: The Series,'” he humorously noted, eliciting laughter from the audience. He emphasized the demanding nature of her role and the effortless way she navigates the challenges, adding, “We’re only pawns in this game, and she really creates a space where collaboration flourishes, which has been incredibly inspiring for me as an actor.” Whitford momentarily became emotional as he concluded, “So I’m truly grateful for that.”
In a special highlight, an exclusive sneak peek from an upcoming Season 6 episode showcased Ann Dowd‘s Aunt Lydia interacting with a key character, leaving the audience in awe and ultimately erupting in laughter, offering a promising taste of the new season’s tone.
As the event wrapped up, executive producer Warren Littlefield delivered a hopeful message to fans, emphasizing the support the creative team received from Hulu throughout the show’s nine-year journey. “Hulu encouraged us to find a ray of hope amidst stories that oscillate between optimism and despair. June has consistently been our guiding force, and therefore the audience feels empowered to persist,” he explained.
Littlefield highlighted the significance of the show’s message, particularly in today’s world. “In a time when it can be tempting to withdraw due to the harsh realities we face, we mustn’t give up the fight. Our characters are not larger-than-life heroes; they are ordinary women accomplishing extraordinary feats. Thus, our overarching message remains: ‘The war’s not over, but the fight continues.’ This optimism is our legacy,” he stated.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 will debut on Hulu on Tuesday, April 8, with the first three episodes available followed by weekly releases leading up to the series finale on May 27.
