Recent commentary from Richard Kay, a close associate of the late Princess Diana, has shed light on how Diana might have felt about her daughter-in-law, Meghan Markle. Kay, who was the last person to speak with Diana before her untimely passing in 1997, shared his reflections during an appearance on The Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential.

Describing Diana as “remarkable” and a cherished friend, Kay recounted the bond they developed in the final years of her life. He mentioned that their relationship included shared dinners, movie outings, and scenic drives along the Norfolk coast, where Diana spent part of her childhood.

Although Kay believes Diana would have initially welcomed Meghan, he suggested that she would also feel “disappointed” with the evolving dynamics between her sons, Harry and Prince William. He stated, “I think she would have admired Harry’s decision to settle in America,” but couldn’t overlook the unfortunate rift that has developed between the brothers.

Since stepping back from their duties as working royals in 2020, Harry and Meghan have established their home in California, marking a significant departure from royal expectations. Kay noted similar aspirations from Diana, who had expressed to him a desire to live in the United States, particularly towards the end of her life. “She loved the U.S. I think that, if she could, she would have moved there and lived there,” he reflected.

However, Kay pointed out that Diana refrained from pursuing this dream because she wanted to remain present for William and Harry. “She couldn’t just abandon them—they were young boys,” he explained. As the boys matured, he speculated that Diana might have found it easier to consider a more transatlantic lifestyle.

Kay further elaborated on Diana’s attraction to the U.S., suggesting it stemmed from her belief that she would have experienced greater freedom there. “She felt she would be freer somehow—that they took a more nuanced attitude towards celebrity,” he noted, citing the relatively unhindered lives of numerous Hollywood personalities as a reason for her optimism about living in America.
