Priyanka Chopra’s journey from Miss World to film star began with the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan.
Released in 2002, Thamizhan marked the beginning of Priyanka Chopra’s transition from a beauty queen to a prominent film star. The trajectory of her career is intriguing, particularly as many beauty pageant winners, like her, often explore opportunities in South Indian cinema before entering Bollywood. After winning the Miss World title, Priyanka initially hesitated to pursue acting but eventually found herself drawn to the industry.
In an interview with Lehren Retro, Priyanka’s mother, Madhu Chopra, shared insights about how this opportunity unfolded. Priyanka was initially reluctant to take on the role; however, her brother reached out to their father, encouraging him to convince her to at least audition during her summer break. It took considerable persuasion, but ultimately, Priyanka decided to take the leap, fulfilling her father’s wishes.
Madhu emphasized the significance of Priyanka’s debut in such a high-profile project alongside established star Vijay. She expressed how much Priyanka admired Vijay for his patience during filming. “She truly values Vijay’s support because he was incredibly understanding as she navigated the rigorous demands of production,” Madhu noted. The choreography, led by Raju Sundaram, posed a significant challenge, especially as Vijay, an accomplished dancer, set a high bar for her performance. Additionally, Priyanka faced the added difficulty of mastering a new language for her dialogues.
Madhu elaborated on how Priyanka faced criticism for her initial performances. “We advised the crew not to waste any film reels and allowed her to practice in the evenings. This approach helped her grasp both her lines and dance moves more effectively.” As her skills improved and she began to receive positive feedback, Priyanka found joy in acting, paving the way for her successful career.
On the professional front, Priyanka Chopra is preparing for her next collaboration with renowned director SS Rajamouli, where she is set to star alongside Mahesh Babu. Details about this project are expected to be announced soon. Additionally, she has completed filming for her upcoming action-thriller, The Bluff, and is set to feature alongside John Cena and Idris Elba in the American action-comedy Heads of State.
