Pro-Life Group Urges Governor Hochul to Reconsider Abortion Pill Prescriber Law

FIRST ON FOX: A prominent medical organization advocating for pro-life principles is calling on New York Governor Kathy Hochul to reassess a new law that conceals the identities of healthcare providers who prescribe the abortion medication mifepristone.

In a letter addressed to Governor Hochul on Wednesday, the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs (AAPLOG) expressed concerns that the legislation “recklessly endangers” patients, particularly in scenarios where follow-up care is critical due to potential complications.

The letter emphasizes that, “By hiding the identities of prescribing doctors, this law endangers the very patients we aim to protect.” AAPLOG argues that the law exacerbates the risks associated with telehealth prescriptions of mifepristone, as it complicates identifying prescribing physicians, which could be vital in emergencies.

NEW YORK GOV. HOCHUL SIGNS LAW PROTECTING ABORTION PILL PRESCRIBERS AFTER DOCTOR INDICTED IN LOUISIANA

In February, Governor Hochul enacted legislation designed to protect the anonymity of physicians who prescribe abortion pills, a move prompted by the indictment of a New York physician accused of improper telehealth practices in Louisiana.

AAPLOG stressed that direct contact with prescribing physicians is crucial for effective follow-up care. They noted that this aspect of care was fundamental to the original FDA approval of mifepristone, as such follow-ups are not only common but also essential for patient safety.

“The risks associated with drug-induced abortions are frequently minimized, yet they can be significant,” the group stated in their correspondence. They implored the governor to reconsider the implications the new law holds for accessibility to care for women facing complications.

Mifepristone, utilized primarily for medical abortions within the first ten weeks of pregnancy, is the first medication in a two-drug regimen; the second drug, misoprostol, is taken shortly afterward to complete the abortion process. In recent months, numerous states have enacted measures to restrict access to such abortion medications.

Governor Hochul has been criticized for potentially facilitating actions that would undermine national protections concerning abortion. Critics point to the law as a tool that may enable pro-abortion states to counteract legislative efforts in pro-life states, as detailed by AAPLOG Action Executive Director Rebecca Weaver.

“It’s essentially permitting states that support abortion to overshadow those that do not,” Weaver stated, arguing that the law contradicts the principles set forth in the Dobbs decision aimed at regulating abortion following the repeal of Roe v. Wade.

AAPLOG contends that by obscuring the identities of prescribing physicians, the law complicates women’s access to necessary follow-up care, posing a significant risk to their health. The organization argues this development could lead to adverse health outcomes in cases of complications resulting from medical abortions.

Governor Hochul’s signing of the law occurred shortly after the indictment of physician Margaret Carpenter along with her associates in Louisiana. They were accused of misusing telemedicine to prescribe abortion pills to a minor who subsequently experienced complications.

The newly enacted law permits providers’ names to be omitted from abortion pill packaging, replaced instead with the name of their medical practice, aimed at preventing similar exposures as faced by the Louisiana physician.

“From this point forward, such disclosures will cease,” Hochul stated during the law’s signing ceremony.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Governor Hochul’s office for further comment.
