Remembering Tom Woll: A Pioneer in the Publishing Industry
Tom Woll, a notable figure in the publishing world, passed away on December 25 from complications related to Parkinson’s disease at the age of 76. His contributions to the industry and his role as a mentor and consultant have left a lasting impact.
Woll’s career began with a prominent role as Vice President and General Manager at Vanguard Press, a company owned by his family. His journey through the industry continued as he held significant positions at major publishing houses, including John Wiley & Sons, where he oversaw its professional and trade division. Woll also served as publisher for Storey Communications and Rodale Press, showcasing his diverse expertise across various facets of publishing.
In 1993, Woll ventured into consulting by founding Cross River Publishing Consultants, located in Katonah, New York. His firm supported a wide range of clients, from large publishers to independent houses, offering strategic guidance that enhanced their operations and profitability.
In addition to his executive roles, Woll was a dedicated educator, sharing his vast knowledge as an adjunct professor at institutions such as New York University and Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. His book, Publishing for Profit: Successful Bottom-Line Management for Book Publishers, published in 1998 by Chicago Review Press, became a key resource in the industry, going through five editions and being translated into ten languages, reflecting his insights and strategies that many found invaluable.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, daughters Rebecca and Hannah, and granddaughters Etta, Shea, Leni, and Wren. In honor of his legacy, memorial donations may be directed to Habitat for Humanity.
